Why Visit Cherrapunji?
Cherrapunji — locally known as Sohra — is one of the wettest places on Earth, a dramatic plateau-edge destination that receives over 11,000 mm of rainfall annually and rewards visitors with some of the most breathtaking waterfall, canyon, and cave scenery anywhere in India. The landscape here is defined by water — falling from cliffs, pooling in emerald valleys, seeping through limestone caves, and threading through ancient living root bridges engineered by the Khasi people over 500 years.
Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 m, is the crown jewel — a thundering cascade that drops off the plateau edge into a turquoise pool far below. The Double Decker Living Root Bridge at Nongriat, reached via a legendary 3,500-step trek, is one of Northeast India's most photographed natural engineering wonders.
Cherrapunji is best in monsoon — when the falls are in full roar, the mist hangs permanently over the valleys, and the entire plateau glows an impossibly vivid green. But even in winter, the dried-grass cliffs, distant Bangladesh plains, and limestone canyon views remain extraordinary.
