Why Visit Mawsynram?

Mawsynram holds the record for the highest average annual rainfall of any place on Earth — over 11,870 mm per year — making it an extraordinary destination for those who seek landscapes shaped entirely by water. Located on the southern escarpment of the Khasi Hills, just 65 km from Shillong, the plateau village looks south over endless green valleys and, on clear days, the plains of Bangladesh stretching to the horizon.

The landscape during monsoon is genuinely otherworldly — clouds move through the village at ground level, waterfalls appear on every hillside, and the sound of rain is constant and powerful. Locals famously line their rooms with thick padding of grass (called knups) worn as organic raincoats, and the entire community has adapted its architecture and lifestyle to embrace rather than resist the rain.

Mawjymbuin Cave, with its remarkable naturally formed stalagmite shaped like a Shiva lingam, adds a spiritual dimension to the visit. Combined with Cherrapunji (just 15 km away), Mawsynram makes for a complete Meghalayan monsoon experience.
